65-Days to Reshape it All

Because I got on the scale this morning and to my horror and utter disgust I realized I'm creeping back into dangerous territory...
I just bought Bure's book last week and am looking forward to beginning this 65-day challenge! If you are looking for encouragement in your weight-loss/fitness journey then won't you consider joining me? 65 days from now we can celebrate our success together on the beach!!

A New Year's Trip to the Bookstore

Happy New Year!
We started the 2011 year with breakfast with my parents and then a trip to the bookstore (or "library" as JK likes to call it!)

Kenners has been dying for this Klutz book and wanted to leave the bookstore shortly after finding it. As soon as we arrived home she started making a bracelet.
Rand has been reading the Warriors series but it's been slow going waiting for the books at the library. They're so popular and hardly ever on the shelves. She bought books 3 & 4.
I browsed the 2011 calendars (how I love a brand new calendar!), the diet book section (it's the New Year...what more can I say?), and the magazines. I bought the February edition of Country Living. The all-white cover sold me at first glance. The January 2011 Country Living British Edition also had an all-white cover so it naturally came home with me too. I really like Jonathan Adler's style and decided to splurge and buy his accessorizing book.
I have been thinking about Resolutions for the New Year and have yet to make anything concrete. I had a good idea but am still noodling it out...stay tuned!

We are enjoying a super mild day (56 degrees!!) and a wonderful start to the New Year! I'm truly looking forward to what this year has to bring and the growth I will gain with each passing day!

Disciplining Your Appetite

"Dinnertime. I'm sitting alone, trying to eat slowly. My Guru is always encouraging us to practice discipline when it comes to eating. She encourages us to eat in moderation and without desperate gulps, to not extinguish the sacred fires of our bodies by dumping too much food into our digestive tracts too fast. When students come to her complaining that they're having trouble meditating, she always asks how their digestion has been lately. It only stands to reason that you'll have trouble gliding lightly into transcendence when your guts are struggling to churn through a sausage calzone, a pound of buffalo wings and half a coconut cream pie."

~Elizabeth Gilbert, Eat Pray Love

I don't meditate but if I did I would be in big trouble with Gilbert's Guru. Over the past few weeks I have reached an ultra-low point with my diet and the foods I have decided to eat. I am definitely "dumping" food down my gullet without any thoughts beyond that present moment. And let me tell you, I feel horrible. Sluggish. Heavy. Frustrated. Depressed. It's amazing the gamut of emotions tied to the foods we eat!

Today I begin {again!} to take charge of my eating and to reign in my appetite. It takes so much work but the results are worth their weight in gold!

Hot Glue and a Dictionary

Yesterday, while watching Conference, I started working on a book wreath. It was super easy and a good way to keep my hands busy while listening to inspired words.
I went to The Dollar Tree and bought a 10" wreath form and a dictionary to rip apart.
Kenners snapped this, albeit, blurry pic while I was hard at work.
(Like my shirt? It says "Women for Linda")
Here's my progress after 2 hours of hot gluing and rolling up pages.
And here it is completed and hanging in my kitchen. Wouldn't it be fun to make a wreath for your kitchen using a recipe book? Hmmmmmmm.
I'm also thinking this might be a fun teacher gift idea. And for a total of $2 I think it might be the most unique and cost effective gift ever!

2010-Week 24

Where did this past week go? Holy guacamole...it just flew by! Hubby has been in St. Louis at a conference. He gets home this morning. Sure do miss him when he's gone. There is so much running around after school with the girls that I don't always remember how nice it is for him to be on "pick-up duty". I drop off and he picks up. It's a nice system.

I had my last PTO meeting of the year last night. Had to bring my 3 kiddos along with me. Fortunately we have an amazing community group through our high school and they provide babysitting for our meetings. The kids had a great time but again, I take for granted how smoothly DK and I work as a team.

I am working with two new fellow officers this coming school year. My ultra-talented and amazing Treasurer is moving to a new town and my Vice-President stepped down due to working more hours and having less time to devote. Completely understandable! I have an enthusiastic new Vice-President and a new ready-to-learn Treasurer. I am grateful to continue on with my Secretary of two years. None of them have blogs so I can't link to them! Maybe one of their new duties should include starting a blog!
One more week until the end of the weight loss challenge I have going on with my sister. I am down another 3.8 pounds bringing me to a grand total of 11.2 pounds lost!! Hoping to drop two more this coming week but not so sure that will happen since I lost almost 4 this week....

Yesterday I started reading Seth Grahame-Smith's Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter...not so sure what I think. Of course I'm only on page 52. Got to get into it a bit more before I form an opinion. I've heard great things about the author's other books so I thought I'd give this one a try. I also have this to read. What's with all the blood and vampires?

Are you ready for Father's Day next week? I've had my dad's gifts for a few weeks now but have to wait until next week to pre-order DK's.
One for him. One for me!

A little nourishment for the body, a little nourishment for the mind!!

Warped Sense of Humor

Does anyone else see a flaw in my thinking when I bought these two items at the store today?
And yes, I am totally planning on eating that big ol' peanut butter & chocolate heart WHILE reading Jillian's book! Ha!!!

Snowy New Year's Eve

It's snowing here on the East Coast this New Year's Eve.
We are very low on groceries...should have gone shopping yesterday! We will make do with frozen pizza, Welch's Sparkling Grape Juice and leftover Christmas candy. Could be worse!

I'm engrossed in The Help by Kathryn Stockett. I have heard such amazing things about this book from just about everyone. I didn't buy it but held out waiting my turn on the library's hold list. I picked it up yesterday and haven't put it down since! Perfect day to stay curled up reading...
And of course I am finalizing my New Year's Resolutions.
I will post them tomorrow.
Can't wait to share!

Boob Tube

"About one-quarter of American children between the ages of two and five have a TV in their room."

-Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser

You'll never guess what my sweet 3 year old boy said to me last night as I was getting him ready for bed. "I don't have a TB (that is how he says TV) in my room."

Yikes! It starts so young...which the advertising companies know oh so well!!

Busy day today!
What am I busy doing, you may ask...
I have the following waiting for me on my DVR!
Celebrity Apprentice Season Finale (3 hours)

Yes, I do other things besides watch tv.....

And of course I love to read!
I just picked up a guilty read at the library this morning.

Planting Seeds

"I lifted my head to spy on Hannah playing nearby in the shade and saw Tom and Mother broad-hoeing the garden. They were planting corn, beans, and squash all in the same mounds together. The corn would grow tall and straight as a pole. The beans would vine the corn towards the sun and the squash would grow in the shadows below."

~The Heretic's Daughter by Kathleen Kent

What? Me anxious to start planting my garden?
Whatever gave you that idea?

Modern Trappings

I've been tagged by April @ Straight from the Heart. This is a real fun tag for me as I love to read books! I had six books stacked together on my shelf behind the couch so I grabbed the book on top of the pile, Amish Grace. I am reading this book for my church's book club.

Here are the rules:
Grab the nearest book. Open the book to page 56. Find the fifth sentence. Post the text of the next two to five sentences in your journal/blog along with these instructions. Don't dig for your favorite book, the cool book, or the intellectual one: pick the CLOSEST. Tag five other people to do the same.

Amish Grace by Donald B. Kraybill, Steven M. Nolt and David L. Weaver-Zercher

"Together these themes built on a much longer tradition of public tribute to Amish life. The Amish have long captivated outsiders with their tight-knit communities and resistance to modern technologies, prompting some to wonder if the Amish have something good the English are missing. In the aftermath of the Nickel Mines shooting, this tune of amazement played in a slightly different key. Not only did the Amish have something good that others lacked, but in many people's eyes the Amish were good-or at least better than the vast majority of their American neighbors."

Over the past two days I have spent 8 hours on the telephone (with countless more to come over the next day and a half). I'm beginning to think the Amish are on to something with their "resistance to modern technologies"! I'm ready to throw my phone out the window! But of course there are some modern items I could never live without:
washer/dryer
dishwasher
blowdryer and flat iron...I'm quite scary looking without these tools!
computer...duh!
TV and DVR
central air conditioning and heating
vacuum cleaner...I know, I'm sick and use mine everyday!
stove/oven...we would all starve if I had to cook over an open fire
electricity...I always burn my thumb lighting candles using matches
water heating tank...or whatever it's called

Oops, the phone's ringing...should I answer it or throw it out the window?

Housework Got Ya Down?

"Work in that household never ceased, and it called for skill and patience, qualities Kit did not seem to possess. There was meat to be chopped, and vegetables to prepare for the mid-day meal. The pewter mugs had to be scoured with reeds and fine sand. There was a great kettle of soap boiling over a fire just behind the house, and all day long Judith and her mother took turns stirring it while she readied the soap barrel. Kit tried to keep a gingerly distance from the kettle. The strong fumes of lye stung her eyelids and stirring the heavy mass tired her arms and shoulders....

...Surely there must come a moment when all the tasks would be done and some brief leisure earned, yet always a new chore loomed ahead. A shearing had brought a veritable mountain of gray wool to be washed and bleached and dyed. There was water to draw and linen to scrub and, everlastingly, the endless rows of vegetables to weed and hoe."

~The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare

I don't think I'll complain today about having to run my vacuum, use my washer and dryer, empty the dishwasher or drive to the grocery store for fresh vegetables.

All is in perspective, at least for today!

Givin' and Receivin'

Pedaling, a good blogging buddy of mine, had the wonderful opportunity to attend the RNC earlier this month. While she was there she picked up some good loot to give away on her blog. Well, I was one of the lucky recipients and was given the choice of what I would like her to send me. I had a hard time making up my mind (I usually do not have this problem but she had some great things to choose from) and so I asked her to choose for me. Can I say that was the best decision, ever! Look what I came home to on Saturday!

Thanks, Pedaling, for such great stuff!
Can't wait to drive around in my Odyssey with my NObama bumper sticker!
I'm actually praying for a bad hair day so I'll have a great excuse to wear my new hat!

It's so much fun to receive good mail but it's also fun to give good mail. So, without further ado, I present to you my Time Out for Women giveaway! I brought back for one lucky (or as a friend of mine says, blessed) winner a Time Out care package. This package includes the following:

Bath and Body Works Aromatherapy Orange Ginger
Shampoo, Conditioner, Body Lotion (travel sizes)
I stayed overnight at the Marriott and they provide this wonderful line to their guests.
I, in turn, must share them with you!

What's a time out without chocolate?
And let me tell you, there was a lot of chocolate to be had!
Going to Time Out is a blissful getaway but returning home
to your family completely rejuvenated is even more blissful!

In addition to hearing amazing presenters I was also able to browse through amazing books! Ever since reading Merrilee Boyack's book, Strangling Your Husband is Not an Option, I've been a fan of hers. Come to find out she is also the best friend of a new blogging buddy of mine, Diane. What a SMALL world! Okay, enough rambling; I'll stop now.
I am giving away Merrilee's newest book and (of course) it is an autographed copy.
Nothing is too good for my blog readers!

For the past four years I have worked behind-the-scenes for Time Out for Women. This year I was asked to take on an additional responsibility: stage decor. For the high round table in the front corner of the stage I bought red gerber daisies. Look what is on this book's cover:

How could I resist?
I could not! Therefore this book is also included in the giveaway!

Lastly, I will include all of the above listed goodies in the official Time Out for Women tote bag!

Viola!

Sooo, if you would like to be included in my Time Out giveaway here's what you must do:

Leave a comment on this post.
That's it! I am not making it complicated at all!
You do not have to go back to your blog and post about this giveaway, blah, blah, blah (though if you would like, you are more than welcome to do so) and then get back to me, etc., etc.
No, no, no!
Just leave a comment!
And good luck...or would that be good blessings?

(Package must be sent to an address within the United States.
Winner will be selected Friday, September 26th @ 12 noon EST)

Scary, Scary Dolls

Once upon a time, long, long ago, a little girl named Rae watched The Wizard of Oz. (I was about 5 years old) This movie changed the course of my life from that moment on. That horrid green faced witch would haunt me the rest of my life.

To this day, regardless of how hot it may be, I have to sleep with the covers pulled up around my neck. If the covers have slipped down I startle awake with the Wicked Witch of the West swooping down at me. TO THIS DAY!!

Today, at lunch time, JK and I quickly stopped into McD's to pick up a happy meal. Lo and behold what do I see? Madame Alexander's Wizard of Oz Dolls! Ack! Tell me, is this or is this not a scary looking doll? Is it just me? Is there anyone else out there who can relate?

As a side note, when the broadway musical, Wicked became a phenomenon I decided to read the book written by Gregory Maguire. (I always try to read the book or research the history before going to see a play, musical, movie or what not.) BIG MISTAKE! The book was horrid!!! I do NOT recommend reading it and thankfully the play is NOTHING like the book!

A Quick 1-2-3

This is going to be a hodge podge of a post. A little this, a little that.

#1 - I want to take a moment and introduce you to RoverHaus. RoverHaus recently started commenting on my blog and guess what? RoverHaus is a GUY! I thought the only male who read my blog was my dear hubby. But no! I must say I stopped short and quickly thought back on my posts praying I hadn't written anything that included too-much-info on ladies' issues! I had not given much thought to male bloggers (any others out there?) but think they make a wonderful addition! Welcome RoverHaus! Take a moment and check out his post on his amazing wife!

#2 - Yesterday JK and I met up with his playgroup at a local park. We rode the carousel (twice), ate lunch and played on the playground. He had a great time! We haven't made it to playgroup all summer so it was nice seeing everyone again.

#3 - As many of you know I had thought about homeschooling the girls this year. After much research and prayer DK and I decided to send them back to their public school. Last night, while reading, The Glass Castle, I gasped in horror at the following excerpt:

"The few teachers the town did have were not exactly the pick of the litter....Miss Page had gotten the ax when the principal caught her toting a loaded rifle down the school hall. Miss Page said all she wanted to do was motivate her students to do their homework."

And I thought I had big issues to worry about!

Happy Friday everyone!

I've Got Nothin'

It's raining today.

The dryer just stopped which means I have to go and fold the clothes.
I hate folding laundry.

I would much rather go and curl up with my book.
How I am lovin' this book.

I told the girls we would go swimming today.
Did I mention it was raining?

We are going to head down to Auntie's house this afternoon.
Wall-e is on the agenda.

I'm feeling a bit melancholy today.
Maybe it's the rain.
Maybe it's the laundry.
Maybe it's because I'm 2/3 of the way through my book and then what?
Maybe it's the fact I can't take the kids swimming after I told them I would.
Maybe it's because I will be chasing JK around the theater's lobby while everyone else enjoys the movie.
Maybe it's PMS.

It's probably the last one.

Summer Vacation - Day Two

It's Talk About Tuesday and this week marks Summer Vacation for us East Coast Evans'! In fact...

...For all of you Twilight Series fans out there...the family and I are winging our way to Forks' neighboring city, Port Angeles!

And don't forget (as if you could), Breaking Dawn will be released on August 2nd! I already have my copy pre-ordered!! I'm on pins and needles to read what happens. Too bad the book was not released in time for the trip. That would have been PERFECT!

Books for My Library

Yesterday I received in the mail a mini-booklet from one of those book-a-month clubs. I am tempted to sign up so I can add some of the following books to my library:

I've been wanting to check this book out for quite some time.

LOVE anything on the water!

I have been to Mary Carol Garrity's shop in
Atchison, KS and absolutely LOVE it!

Just found their website the other day.

My little nest is only 2,000 square feet. Enough said.

Do any of you belong to the Home Style Book Club or something similar? Any thoughts or recommendations? I'm very tempted....
