I am an ant or at least trying to be!

Even though Autumn has not officially begun my thoughts have already turned to winter. According to The Old Farmer's Almanac, my little nest on the East Coast will experience : "a colder and snowier than normal winter, with near or above-normal precipitation. The coldest temperatures will occur in mid-December, early January, and early February." Hmmm, I'd better think of some ways to keep warm!
Due to the rising costs of EVERYTHING, hitting the thermostat up a degree or two this winter is not in the cards. Instead I have started gathering quilts and throws in a cute basket and have placed them in the living and family rooms within easy reach of cold little bodies.
While I was out and about on Saturday I popped into Marshall's. I was browsing their bedding section when I came across two warm, fluffy and oh-so-soft twin blankets that were perfect for the girl's beds. The price seemed reasonable and I decided to buy them. My thoughts then turned to my own bed and I started looking for a quilt or coverlet to use in addition to my down comforter. I was not able to justify the expense and ended up not buying anything for my bed.
Fast forward to Sunday. I was visiting my mom and told her I bought the girl's new blankets and that I had looked for a little extra warmth for my bed as well. She got this look on her face that said, "Oh shoot...I have a secret...should I tell her now or make her wait?" She took me down to the closet where she stores birthday and Christmas gifts and pulled out a king size quilt that looked identical to the ones I had been looking at the day before! In addition she also had the softest throw (with feathers lining the edge, no less!) that will not only be warm but is so funky looking I immediately fell in love with it! Problem solved! Now, this winter, DK and I will be warm and snuggly with flannel sheets, a down comforter, a quilt AND a feather-lined throw. Phew!
I wasn't the only one trying to feather my nest with a few extra layers of insulation this weekend. DK spent all day Saturday doing maintenance around the house and getting things prepared for the coming cold weather. We have been having a roofing issue and he was up in the attic and on the roof fixing it. (This is the first time we've lived in a house long enough to encounter problems such as this. Usually we build, move in and out within 2-3 years! Does this mean it's time to move?)
The one area I am not like the ant is in food storage! Probably THE most important area and I flunk at it! Decorate my house? Check. Clean my house? Check. Maintain the house? Check. Grocery shop? Hold the presses. Keep the pantry stocked? Yikes. Lord help me...I have my work cut out for me!
Don't forget to stop by 11th Heaven's Homemaking Mondays!

How neat! You've reminded me to once over our blankets! (don't you love it when your mom reads your mind!) I DO NOT want to be a grasshopper (I can't even fiddle for my supper-speaking of supper, I probably ought to once over the food too:)
Ugh. Grocery shopping. Hate it. Gotta go tomorrow.
A colder winter????? Reason number 2 million why I need to move back to the tropics. It's gonna be a looooonnnnnggggg winter!
I love extra blankets and throws in the winter, even though we don't experience harsh weather. I just like to be cozy. The bad part is I am allergic to down, my eyes will swell shut if I'm near it.
That is awesome that you are getting a new quilt and didn't even know it. Aren't you glad you didn't buy the one in the store.
You could always move to AZ for the summer. We call people that move here during the winter snowbirds. You would make a pretty snowbird.
Isn't it funny how mother's have a natural instinct as to what we need?
You must explain the ant and the grasshopper comparison. :-)
My hubby seems cook us out of the house w/our wood broiler.
Oooh, how neat that you're getting things you really wanted and needed for the upcoming holidays! Double Yea for you hun! I'm dreading the hard part of winter. I hope my hubby is home and not traveling to help me shovel out!!! ;) Happy almost Tuesday to you! Les
Coming from the South, we don't get much snow or really cold weather down our way. When we do get a few flakes, it's a really big deal! We all go play in it for hours, which is not easy to do! I have always thought it would be such fun to live in a state that gets a lot of snow and cold weather. Of course, I'm sure it probably does get old after awhile. Bundle up because winter will be here before you know it!
I live in Illinois and I HATE did I tell you I HATE winter!!!! I don't like the cold, hate driving in the snow and the biggest problem twin and I have is ELECTRICITY in our bodies and everything we touch we get shocked. I was thinking of doing a post to see if there is ANYTHING that can be done about this. My husband and son don't have to worry about it unless I touch them!! What causes this I have no idea but when ever I open a door or go to the store and open the cooler to get a gallon of milk I get ZAPPED!! Hate it. I am not looking forward to the high heat bills either :o(
What a great posting! We have not had power, phone or gas at any station for three days. I now know that having gas and distilled water etc. etc. may be good! It was crazy here since the weekend! But, it's also amazing how the neighbors come out and lend a hand in a "crisis" moment!

Thanks so much for your kind words on my kitty yesterday. they meant a lot.
I too dread the winter. We are on an equal payment plan for gas and already our monthly payment has gone up by $50. I hope that's the end of it.
I love your little way of thinking! Love the last little things...check check check! Too cute! I am afraid I am a little of both-the ant and the grasshopper!
I have always loved the story of the ant and the grasshopper! We're good on the bedding dept (although I did borrow your idea of baskets and filled my own with throws for the LR). Instead I've been getting new curtains for the LR and DR slider. I have lovely, wispy curtains for summer but wanted something heavier for winter to help keep out drafts and create a warm, cozy feeling. They're not up yet but will be soon!
Winter...again? Must we? We had the LONGEST winter here this past year! In fact, it pretty much skipped spring and bounced right into summer...
So glad to hear about the gifts awaiting you this winter! You're all ready for any cold weather that blows your way! (We primarily get rain, and a lot of it!)
Have a beautiful day! :)
How smart to think ahead. I need to get a comforter for Jackson's bed. Probably for Lilly's too. I did find a down comforter at a yard sale for $5 last year. Its a full and Lilly's bed is a twin but we made it work. I like the idea of have extra quilts and blankets in the living room. We have no central heat or air here so you can imagine how frosty it can get...
How great that your mom got the same quilt you were looking at.

Oh, this post made me feel all warm and cozy on the inside! I love the idea of having warm throws in the family room in a basket. I am going to do that! Thank you for your inspiration!
