Soap Box

Be forewarned! I am up on my soap box today concerning MUSIC LYRICS. I finally managed to upload two more CD's on Kenners iPod yesterday, Kidz Bop 12 being one of them. On-line this is how this album is advertised:
"Create your own world with Kidz Bop 12, and race to the finish with 18 HUGE kid-friendly songs!" Well, okay, "kid-friendly". I shouldn't have anything to worry about, right? WRONG!! At least in this particular circumstance, "kid-friendly" means they removed words like: d___, m_____-f______, and a couple of hells. The song's IDEA remains the same, which is, "Hey guy. I LIKE you! You're so ADDICTIVE. Stop dating your STUPID girlfriend because I'm so much better than she is". Take a look at some of the lyrics to Avril Lavigne's Girlfriend.

[Chorus]
Hey! Hey! You! You!
I don’t like your girlfriend!
No way! No way!
I think you need a new one
Hey! Hey! You! You!
I could be your girlfriend

Hey! Hey! You! You!
I know that you like me
No way! No way!
No, it’s not a secret
Hey! Hey! You! You!
I want to be your girlfriend

[Verse 1]
You’re so fine
I want you mine
You’re so delicious
I think about ya all the time
You’re so addictive
Don’t you know what I could do to make you feel alright?
Don’t pretend I think you know I’m d___ precious
And H___ Yeah
I’m the m_____-f______ princess
I can tell you like me too and you know I’m right

[Bridge:]
She’s like so whatever
And you could do so much better
I think we should get together now
And that’s what everyone’s talking about!

[Verse 2]
I can see the way, I see the way you look at me
And even when you look away I know you think of me
I know you talk about me all the time again and again
So come over here, tell me what I want to hear
Better yet make your girlfriend disappear
I don’t want to hear you say her name ever again

In a second you’ll be wrapped around my finger
Cause I can, cause I can do it better
There’s no other
So when's it gonna sink in?
She’s so stupid
What the h____ were you thinking?!

Sorry, Kidz Bop but just because you clean up a song's lyrics does NOT make its content and ideas appropriate for children. I am appalled and have removed this song from Kenner's iPod. In a way, I'm glad this happened. It's a good wake-up call for me. From this point on, my kid's music will be monitored more vigilantly. It's my job. The last thing a 7 year old girl needs to be singing is how stupid some other girl is and how much better she is and how she can make some guy "feel alright"!

That's it. I'm stepping down from my box now. Sigh.......

I'm with you on that soap box. I think too many parents are too lenient about what their kids watch, listen to and play. Good for you for taking a stand, even if it is just for your kids!!

I had that same thought the other day as Kayli INSISTED that we listen to a certain song that I disapprove of. Then I thought, "Wait, who's the Mommy here?" And that's why I need more Josh Groban CDs.

It is amazing the lyrics out there today. We have to be so vigilant with the music the kids listen to as well as the TV programs. Sigh!!
